South Australian Lobster Co (SALCO)
Rebuilding and automation of plant facilities
The objective
LM Engineering was engaged by SALCO (the South Australian Lobster Co ) to complete a food processing plant upgrade for their Preston facility, where live lobsters are handled in oversized tanks before being processed for distribution.
With growing demand for their product internationally, the existing plant was limiting their opportunity for growth due to its highly manual processes.
The process
The work completed by LM Engineering included:
A comprehensive review of existing operations, processing and storage requirements, and components of the flow that required automation.
The design of a purpose-built facility with new above-ground tanks including connecting walkways and platforms, as well as an in-ground tank. Each featured the necessary control systems to maintain temperature and water cleanliness, as well as pumping requirements to ensure the water is safe and optimal for lobsters to survive during the processing period.
Detailed designs of an overhead crane system and lifting devices, enabling lobsters to be classified according to condition and weight.
The issue of installation and fabrication works for competitive tender, which were then reviewed in conjunction with SALCO through the selection process.
Site supervision services and management of trades, including the digging up of the floor for the inground tank installation.
Over a period of eight months, the LM Engineering team managed all aspects of the project inhouse.
The outcome
The facilities rebuild was successfully completed and has enabled SALCO to improve its organisation, efficiency and speed of processing. The site is now the largest exporter of live lobsters in Australia.
LM Engineering continues to work with SALCO with ongoing support and maintenance requirements.
