HydroChem: Modernisation

Creating the most sophisticated operations in the industry

The objective

LM Engineering was engaged to project manage and provide extensive engineering design services for HydroChem’s Modernisation project.

Hydrochem one of the largest water treatment companies in Australia, saw a need to implement modern technologies into the manufacturing plant, to maximise productivity, efficiency and safety. Extensive manual processes required automation, to ensure improvements in the safe handling of materials. The project also included the design and construction of a new state of the art office space for the staff.

The process

As the project managers and engineering designers for the  HydroChem Modernisation project, the work completed by LM Engineering over a period of 18 months included:

  1. Design and delivery of the technical requirements for the new fully automated manufacturing plant, including the complex electrical control systems required for the manufacture of different chemicals.

  2. Scoping and design of leading edge technologies implemented in order to improve productivity, efficiency and safety, including robot cells with vision systems, and driverless forklifts for handling of dangerous chemicals.

  3. All tender scope of works documentation for procurement of manufacturing equipment and detailed engineering designs as required for fabrication and installation.

  4. Ongoing liaison and guidance with the HydroChem CEO and board, guiding them through the design process to demonstrate what the new manufacturing facilities would look like.

  5. Engaging and liaising with architects to ensure the new office space would meet the evolving needs of the business, accommodating all staff from the company over two levels, including a custom-designed laboratory for chemical testing.

  6. Ongoing site supervision for all civil, mechanical and electrical works throughout the project.

The outcome

LM Engineering successfully managed all design and construction phases for the Modernisation Project, as well as the relocation of 80 staff from the original site. The whole company was consolidated into one location, with increases in productivity, efficiency and safety due to the new and improved facilities.
